Playboy Mansion look

Elliott rocks a Bonds dressing gown, pajamas, scarf, ugg boots and his Tasmanian friend Oliver's hand-me-down terry towelling hat with pocket at 5 in the afternoon.

Phanatics 5 & 6

Elliott's Phanatic Around Town tour continues at the Comcast Center, top, and the Kimmel Centre. What is he singing along to on the Phanatic's keyboard? Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, of course! Not really. Truth is, he's covering Amy Winehouse's best known single.

NFL draft weekend

In the absence of standard NFL protective regalia Elliott repurposes this party favour as a helmet.

Haddon Fire Co No 1

Elliott happens upon Haddon Fire Co No 1 in Haddonfield, a gem of a small, historic town in New Jersey. We visited only because Elliott wanted to ride the PATCO Speedline, a fast train that crosses the Delaware River on Ben Franklin Bridge. But we shall return, and not just for the train trip.

Cocoa emergency

Oh no! The babycino sprinkle shaker is empty. Elliott races to Whole Foods to buy cocoa.

Roti canai

How to entice an energetic little boy to sit still for the duration of a restaurant meal? Bless whatever planets aligned to put Malaysian street food eatery Penang, action aplenty in its open kitchen, next door to Philadelphia Fire Department's Chinatown "House of Dragons". Elliott watches one of the chefs stretch roti canai dough and waits for Medic 1, Engine 20 or Ladder 23 to race by to an emergency.

Rodin Museum

Philadelphia's Rodin Museum houses the largest collection of sculptor Auguste Rodin's work outside Paris. Elliott shows scant interest in the collection but loves to play with the gravel in the grounds.

More Phanatic

Elliott continues his mission to visit all 20 Phanatic statues, a new public art installation linked to the 2010 Major League Baseball season. Most of the Phanatics are stationed at places of public interest. The first statue we visited is at LOVE Park. Phanatic, bottom, is inside the Independence Visitor Center. The Phanatic, top, is outside a bank that sponsors the Phillies. Struggling to come up with something of public interest about this unremarkable location, H recalls that it's within a block of where an attempted abduction occurred last September.

Rescue 1

Elliott visits his favourite Philadelphia firehouse Engine Company 29, home to such fascinating specialty trucks as Rescue 1, Rescue 1A (for water rescues) and Collapse 1. We've at least five firehouses within walking distance in Center City. Engine Company 29 requires a subway ride, which only adds to its allure for a small boy fascinated by machines. Above, Elliott races to a dire emergency in Rescue 1 and later, at home, he hoses down a burning building from the back of Engine 6.

Bus 23

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Center City anymore. Elliott cruises the 'hood aboard Bus 23.

Cheese Ladies

Elliott's favourite American cheese is Fat Cat, a name in no way inspired by the Australian children's television character, which is the first thing it brings to mind for H and G. This cheese is produced locally at Birchrun Hills Farm. Elliott is such an avid Fat Cat fan that he has endeared himself to its producers, known to him as "the Cheese Ladies". When they gave him the cow, above, this probably wasn't quite the future they envisioned for it. Hola Cheese Ladies! And thanks again for the gift and Elliott's all-you-can-eat Fat Cat feasts.

Phanatic

Major League Baseball's 2010 season started this week and to mark the occasion, home team the Phillies commissioned 20 local artists to decorate six-foot-tall statues of their mascot the Phanatic. The statues will spend the season at Philadelphia landmarks and be auctioned to benefit charitable causes after the Phillies win the World Series. Elliott and Red Cat visited this one at LOVE Park this afternoon.

Punxsutawney Pizza Man

As documented in the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day, Pennsylvanians consult Punxsutawney Phil to find out when winter will end. Here in Center City we know it's over when the proprietor of the dodgy neighbourhood pizza place (we've seen customers stretchered into the back of a medic truck four times) puts a chair on the pavement in the evening and spends most of it appraising the passing parade of pretty ladies and gesticulating melodramatically while talking on his mobile phone. In this photo, Elliott's channelling Punxsutawney Pizza Man while waiting for his morning babycino.
